Q: My cholestrol medication makes me tired. Do I really need to take it?
I have been on cholestrol lowering medication since 1992. It has been making me feel tired, aching in the legs and generally unenthusiastic about my life. I need other alternatives. Has anyone had this experience and has anyone any other alternatives to the medication?
A: eat healthy foods also & the good oils etc
but you should try metamucil
it boasts it lowers cholestrol
but make sure you don't have medication 2hrs after having it because it will just set in the metamucil lol
you can buy Plain Psyllium husks at the super markets near the cereals etc or the health area & its dirt cheap compared to metamucil
Also isnt there some sort of butter that lowers it
but you should ask your Dr because I'm no Dr
good luck with your health

does aspirin help? I am on a low carb diet and eat lots of protein and meat and almost no carbs.
A: Aspirin is a non-steroidal drug. It is used for pain, fever, and inflammation such as arthritis. Exercising regularly will lower your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol levels.
Don't eat fried foods. (bacon, french fries, fried chicken)
Cheese (high in cholesterol)
Swallow one clove of garlic daily, don't chew. Not only does this lower your cholesterol, it also gives you great breath.
I used Vytorin for 6 months and had no side effects at all, but every person is different. Check with a doctor.
Change your diet and your lifestyle. You'll be ok.

A: Here are some tips to lower cholesterol naturally & keep it at a healthy level
1. Diet
• Increase soluble fiber intake. By increasing your intake of soluble fiber to 10 grams per day, you can lower your cholesterol levels a great deal according to some recent studies. Some good sources include certain types of fruits, bran and oat products, and many kinds of vegetables.
•Omega-3 fatty acids can lower bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and raise levels of good cholesterol (HDL).
• Cut down on saturated fat and Trans fats.
- Saturated fats are found in animal-based foods, including meats, butter, whole-milk dairy products (including yogurt, cheese, and ice cream), and poultry skin. They are also found in some high-fat plant foods, including palm oil.
- Trans fats are found mostly in fried foods, pastries, cookies, and other similar foods. Avoiding these types of foods limits your calories, fat intake, and helps lower your cholesterol.
• Avoid Red Meat, Eggs, & Whole Milk - Red meats, whole milk, and egg yolks are concentrated cholesterol foods. They should be avoided and replaced with some of the healthier foods that are low in cholesterol.
2. Exercise - Doing regular exercise for about 30 minutes of exercise 3 or 4 times a week can significantly lower the risk for many major life threatening disease. Regular exercise has been found to help lower cholesterol and reduce triglyceride levels.
3. Don't Stress. Stress and anxiety cause chemicals to be released into your body, raise your blood pressure, and reduce blood flow to your heart.
4. LOse weight - Losing weight in a slow and steady manner improves your health and lowers your cholesterol.
5. Avoid smoking. Smoking increases the build up of plaque in the arteries, exacerbating the affects of high levels of LDL cholesterol.
6. Supplements to Lower Cholesterol. Supplements can lower cholesterol naturally without side effects and more or less with same results as drugs. The only difference if there's any, would be the time: it may take a bit longer to lower cholesterol naturally through supplements.
Q: Crestor, cholestrol medication?
What is the website that is on the Crestor commercial for something to do with cholestrol? It's like a site about finding out what cholestrol is or foods that can fight it... something like that

Q: help on cholestrol medication............?
Serum glycerides was 196 mg/dl before medication and came down to 42 mg/dl after being on 2 month statin medication. Whether to continue the medication or not?
P.S: I'm asking this because doctor's sometimes misguide patients only to get their commissions through the prescribed medicines
A: The normal range is as follows :
1. serum cholesterol between 150 - 200 mg/dl
2. serum triglycerides " 60 - 160 mg/dl
3. HDL cholesterol 30 - 70 mg/dl
4. LDL cholesterol 50 - 150 mg/dl
5. VLDL 0.00 - 35 mg/dl
6. Total/HDL cholesterol ratio 0.00 - 4.9
7. LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio 0.00 - 3.5
Earlier your triglycerides reading at 196 mg/dl was slightly higher than the normal range and now with medication it has fallen to slightly below normal. You should immediately see your doctor.Perhaps he will like to put you on a lower maintenance dose of statins or stop it after a lipid profile test. After taking your family history,B.P.and certain other findings,he might have found you at risk and hence put you on medication, dietary precautions and exercise regimen. Please trust your doctor and ask him whatever questions you have in mind.He is the best judge.
Q: Is medication necessary for reducing cholestrol for ladies after menopause?
A: After talking with your doctor, there are a couple of ways to reduce your cholesterol. One is the dreaded diet and exercise and the other is medication. Most physicians prefer that you try to reduce it by a change in your diet first and start moving. Then if that doesn't bring it down then they will add a medication.
The Biggest key is to work with your doctor. If you need help, you could ask for a consultation with a dietician who could help you modify your normal eating habits. YOu can also look on line for suggestions. A good web site is the American Heart Association. www.americanheart.org
Good luck.
Q: my 'cholestrol' medication, (Pravastatin) has a 'use by' date on the pack. Is it still safe to use after that?
A: It looses it's potency after the expiration date.
Q: How to Reduce LDL Cholestrol without medication?
A: Take over the counter niacine, it lowers the LDL and elevates the HDL. It really works, I use it, and my LDL was abnormal.
Q: I have high cholestrol. Iam taking medication.Should I take this for ever, like BP tablet?
Recently my blood test showed that I have high cholestrol level..i.,e 252 mg. Is it necessary that I should take tablets daily to reduce the level? Is it not sufficient, if I just stop taking fatty, oily foods to reduce my level? I know, for BP patients, taking a BP tablet daily is a MUST for life. But, is it applicable to persons like me with high cholestrol level, also to take one or two tables, daily for life? Kindly answer. I am aged 76 years, and I dont have any kind of illnesses, and I am hale and healthy, without taking any medicine daily.....
A: I am unclear... Are you currently taking medication for your cholesterol or is it for your blood pressure?
If this is the first time that your cholesterol has been checked and is high, it is reasonable to try diet and exercise for 2-3 months and have it rechecked. Depending on the cause of the elevated cholesterol level determines if you would have to take it for life. If you are overweight and have a poor diet, that can be modified over time and medication may not be necessary.
As for the recommended levels, it is below 150 for the total cholesterol, not 70.
Q: If your good cholestrol is too high what should you do to bring it down. Without taking perscription medicati
If your ldl cholestrol (good) is 88 is that too high and can you bring it down without medication?
A: Low density Lipoproteins (LDL cholesterol) is the "bad" cholesterol. And 88 it's a really bad number depending on your total cholesterol.
General guidelines are as follows HDL should be greater than 40 mg/dL. Total cholesterol (HDL + LDL) should be lower than 200 mg/dL
Q: How to reduce cholestrol other than medications ?
A: Whole Grain foods.
Less meat, dairy and eggs
More Fruits, Veggies, and 100% whole grains. Cereals, oatmeals, breads(not white or refined ones)
And exercise
Q: high cholestrol?
if a person is on cholestrol medication to control it's level, is there any harm to not follow the drs' order to take a pill each night. Can people take a pill every other night instead? What can b the consequences if we take not entirely on drs' orders ?
A: Lots of good advice here. I've been helping people deal with cholesterol concerns for over 14 years. Although my background is in cardiac medicine I generally recommend the self-directed approach, which incidentally is what the standard is supposed to be (not even the docs I work with do it though!)
Much of peoples cholesterol problems are genetic, from mom and dad and we can't do much about it. If you're going to take the medications then you'll be taking them forever assuming you don't experience any side effects like someone mentioned earlier. Skipping a day will be a great way to reduce your chance of side effects but a bad way to get your cholesterol in check. Are you asking because you are having problems with the drug? There are many associated with all statins. Is it a money thing? Some insurance company's pay differently for different ones.
The National Cholesterol Board recommends dietary changes first. Challenging to do but much easier on the liver and muscles. Adding a good quality fiber supplement and plant sterols (mimic cholesterol in the body) have been proven for years to do the trick. It needs to be a combination of different fibers and not the $2 potty powder you get at Walmart.
I hope this helps. Jeff the nurse in Nashville
